Tony Howard Awarded 2009-2010 Chapter Safety Professional of the Year Award

The Columbia Willamette Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers takes great pleasure in presenting its 2009-2010 Chapter Safety Professional of the Year Award to Tony Howard.

Tony has been employed at Hoffman Construction for over 14 years. In that capacity, he has been instrumental in leading the company, as well as the industry, in embracing an “Injury Free Environment”. As the Safety Manager for Hoffman’s Oregon operations, Tony oversees all phases of construction on Hoffman’s most challenging projects, from site demolition, excavation and steel erection, through final clean…down town high-rises, schools, medical facilities, condominiums. Most recently he has been involved in the construction of Evergreen’s water park, which entailed lifting a Boeing 747 on top of the building’s steel structure.

Tony’s participation in the Columbia Willamette Chapter, Mt. St. Helens Section, has been noteworthy…his involvement as an active member, committee member and as a Section/Chapter officer, has benefited the Section greatly. Additionally, he is a member of the Washington Governors Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board, a member of the conference committee for the Washington Governor’s Conference, and served as Chair to the Oregon OSHA Construction Advisory Board, which he continues to support as an active member.

Recently, Tony participated in the sharing of information associated with a very dangerous near miss incident involving a scissor lift. Through investigation, Tony learned scissor lift training being provided, does not adequately follow manufacturers’ guidelines for operation. These lessons learned have been presented to Trade organizations, local ASSE meetings, the Construction Safety Summit, and other safety conferences throughout the Pacific NW. By his sharing of this information to so many groups, the program, coined “Render it Dead, Hit the Red”, is saving lives and property.

Tony’s commitment, dedication, professionalism and contribution bring great credit to the safety profession, the ASSE, the Columbia Willamette Chapter and the Greater Portland community. It is the distinct honor and pleasure of the members of this Chapter to recognize Tony as the well deserved 2009-2010 Chapter Safety Professional of the Year. Our heartfelt congratulations are extended to Tony and his family.
